What the whole site needs to achieve

Entertain

  • If your going to use a shotgun, you'll make a bigger impact if you bring the target close to you.

  • Entertaining the visitor to the site encourages association and empathy. ie I like the site so I'll like the place.

  • We need to engage our audience enough to take an interest, at least enough to have Tropics stick in their mind.

  • We need to entertain our audience enough to make them willing to move on the the steps below.

Identify

  • The visitor to the site needs to know who we are and what we do.

  • Our audience needs to be able to feel like they they will be comfortable in the Tropics environment.

  • The users of our site need to feel comfortable enough with Tropics to become a participant.

 

Sell

  • The primary purpose of this site is to drive participation, in all it's forms, at Tropics (the shotgun).

  • When we are 'calling to action', the process must be easy and painless.

  • Part of the process is sell repeat use of the site, during which they will discover more 'avenues for participation' at Tropics.

Inform

  • 'Visitors' to the site are usually seeking general information about who Tropics is.

  • 'Readers' of the site are usually seeking brief information about what Tropics does.

  • 'Users' of the site are usually seeking specific information to answer a particular question that they have.

How it can be achieved
 

Tell a cohesive story

  • The site should flow like the chapters of a book, rather than the articles of a magazine

  • We tell one story, one page leading to the next

  • Each page tells it's part of the story

  • Avoid repetition of subjects

Navigation

  • Page-top navigation should be uncluttered

  • In-page navigation should be used only to expedite navigation

  • All relevant subjects must be listed under the same heading

  • All material relevant to a subject must be on the same page

  • Grouping of material must make (intuitive) sense

Layouts

First glance

  • We need navigation (graphics or text) at the top from which the viewer will then choose where to go

  • Graphics should usually be used when we want the viewer to do something (read, buy, book)

Browse

  • The navigation should lead to (an anchor) paragraphs topped by a phrase or a short sentence (precis)

Read

  • The precis should be followed by an appetiser of a sentence or two, ending with a how to find out more (link?)

Text v Graphics Balance

The mix of graphics and text must reflect what we want to happen on the page

  • Emphasise graphics (busy pages) to cause an action

  • Emphasise text (quiet pages) to provide information

What this page needs to achieve
 

Overview

  • This is our IMAGE page.

  • Clearly the most important page in the whole site.

  • This is the first page that viewers will see we need to sum up who we are and what we do.

  • We are about people and personalities (not numbers)

  • It's like a brochure about the site itself, we need to make viewers want to see more.

Glancer

  • Viewers will like the site or not in  a few seconds.

  • If they don't like it the rest of the site is irrelevant to them.

  • Content is less important than the look of the page.

 

Browser

  • For those that have looked a little deeper, the page should make feel like they can identify with Tropics.

  • If they identify with us, they may stay on to find out more.

 

Reader

  • For those who have stayed on enough to read the home page, they should gain the feeling that they will find out what they need to know.

  • The home page should prove that they will.

How it can be achieved
 

Layout

  • No page title, let the graphics tell the story.
  • Movement, attractive graphics that sum up who and what Tropics is in a second or two. (2-4 second video slideshow)
  • The first glance images (graphics) should fill the viewable page.
  • Neat, easily readable (soundbite) text should be available below for the scroller.

 

Navigation

  • We need navigation (graphics or text) at the top from which the viewer will then choose where to go.

  • The navigation should lead to (an anchor) paragraphs topped by a phrase or a short sentence (precis).

  • The precis should be followed by an appetiser of a sentence or two, including how to find out more (guide to columns) .

 

Graphics/Text

  • A precis page with a dominant graphic to tempt and direct the viewer to browse the supporting text below.

  • The text is not for 'readers', but the column guides or links below the text blocks are.

  1. First paragraph is a sentence or two is a come-on (touristy/real estate pitch).

  2. A sentence or two that contrives to include link opportunities to the "Mission", "Why Play Golf" and "Gallery" pages.

  3. A sentence or two about the forms of golf that you can play at Tropics with a [find out more] type link to the "Golf" page.

  4. A sentence or two about the club and how to be a part of it [with link to "Club" page].

  5. A sentence or two about what we have to offer in the way of hospitality [with a link to "Hospitality" page].

Olly's Thoughts:

We don't need to compare ourselves to others because:

  • We're moving in a different direction

  • We are not going to repeat the mistakes of others

  • We are a unique facility, no-one else is doing what we do or the way we do it

  • We don't have to be better than others, because they are what has been done and we are what will be done.
